A hire fleet needs a generator that earns its keep

Hire is a demanding environment for equipment. A generator can go out to a rural site one week and a city centre refurbishment the next, operated by a different person each time, with nobody on site who knows the kit. Simplicity, compliance and quick turnaround matter as much as the specification on paper.

A tool and construction equipment hire company in Derbyshire came to us wanting to add a trailer-mounted set to its existing generator fleet. It had to be Stage V compliant, straightforward enough for any customer to operate, and available immediately.

The equipment supplied

We supplied a Pramac GBW22P diesel generator, mounted on a trailer and ready to hire out from the day it arrived.

  • Model: Pramac GBW22P
  • Standby rating: 22 kVA / 17.6 kW
  • Prime rating: 20 kVA / 16 kW
  • Output: 3 phase, with 3 phase and single phase sockets, 50Hz at 1500rpm
  • Engine: UK-built Perkins 404J-22G, Stage V compliant
  • Alternator: Linz E1S13MF
  • Build: silent (canopied), 66 dB(A) at 7m
  • Mounting: road trailer
  • Warranty: 1 year or 3,000 hours (whichever comes first) for prime-running applications
  • Application: tool and construction equipment hire fleet

Built for the way hire equipment is used

The control panel is manual and deliberately plain: key start, analogue voltmeter and ammeter dials, and simple fault and warning lights. There is almost nothing to explain at the hire counter and little to go wrong in the hands of an unfamiliar operator.

Servicing between jobs is just as quick. The lift-up canopy opens the set up for checks, filter changes and repairs, so the unit is back out on hire sooner. At 66 dB(A) at 7m it suits noise-sensitive sites, and the compact footprint and low weight keep the trailer easy to tow behind the vehicles hire customers already run.

Why Stage V matters for a mobile set

Since 1 January 2019, new diesel generators built for mobile applications with engines below 56 kW net power have been required to use a Stage V emissions compliant engine under non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) rules. The GBW22P meets that through its Perkins 404J-22G.

For a hire company that is not a technical footnote. Main contractors ask for proof of it, low emission zones enforce it, and a non-compliant set quietly shrinks the list of sites it can be hired on to, along with its residual value.

Available immediately from stock

The GBW22P was already held in our own inventory, so there was no factory build slot to wait for. We sourced a compatible trailer, mounted the set and dispatched it to Derbyshire, where it joined the existing hire fleet and was ready to work on arrival. It travelled with other trailer-mounted sets bound for a second customer further south, with Derbyshire the first drop of the day.
