What Is a Gas Generator?

A gas generator is a generator with an engine that runs on gas, usually LPG or natural gas, instead of diesel or petrol. The models on this page are permanently sited home backup generators, connected to your gas supply and home electrics so they are ready whenever the mains fails.

How Does a Gas Generator Work?

Gas burns inside the engine, turning a crankshaft that drives an alternator to produce electricity. Gas power stations use the same principle at a far larger scale, usually with turbines.

Our Pramac GA generators are designed to respond automatically during a power cut:

  1. The controller detects the mains failure and waits 5 seconds by default, to avoid starting for brief interruptions.
  2. The engine starts and warms up for around 5 seconds.
  3. A transfer switch moves your home onto generator power.
  4. When the mains returns, the switch moves your home back and the engine cools down for around 1 minute before stopping.

Automatic operation requires a compatible transfer switch. We supply the Pramac LTS and Cummins PowerCommand GTEC ATS panels, and both work with these generators.

LPG or Natural Gas?

  • Natural gas suits homes with a mains gas connection. There is no fuel to store or order, but check your meter and supply first (see below).
  • LPG, also known as LP gas or propane, suits off-grid properties. It is stored in a bulk tank or cylinders and does not go off in storage like petrol or diesel can.

Compared with diesel, gas means no liquid fuel tank to manage and a cleaner burn. Diesel generally suits long running hours, prime power and larger loads, so see our diesel generators if that sounds like your application.

Check Your Gas Supply Before You Buy

Your standard UK domestic meter and gas supply may not be capable of the capacity and pressure these generators require, so consult a Gas Safe registered engineer prior to purchase.

  • Capacity: standard UK U6 domestic meters are only rated at 6 m³/h. The GA13000 and GA20000 exceed that at higher loads, while the GA10000 leaves little spare capacity for your boiler and other gas appliances.
  • Pressure: at the generator’s fuel inlet, these models require 8.7-17.4 mbar on natural gas and 24.9-29.9 mbar on LPG, which can differ from what your supply delivers as standard.
