The Grupel PL110D5 is a 110 kVA silent diesel generator delivering dependable three-phase standby and prime power. Built in Europe with a UK Perkins engine, Leroy Somer alternator, Deep Sea control panel and sound-attenuated canopy, it is a robust solution for commercial, industrial and critical backup applications.
The PL110D5 canopied generator provides a standby rating of 110 kVA / 88 kW and a prime rating of 100 kVA / 80 kW at 400V, 50Hz and 1500rpm. Its three-phase output suits sites with substantial electrical loads, including motors, pumps, heating and ventilation equipment, machinery, lighting and building services.
At its 110 kVA standby rating, the generator is designed to provide emergency power during a mains failure. This makes it suitable for facilities that need a reliable contingency supply but do not intend to run the generator continuously.
The 100 kVA prime power rating is intended for variable-load operation where mains electricity is unavailable or unsuitable. Under the manufacturer’s stated rating conditions, prime power can be supplied for an unlimited number of hours, subject to the prescribed average load factor, servicing requirements and operating environment.
Key electrical specifications include:
The 158.4A figure represents the generator’s current output per phase. The separate 160A value shown on the manufacturer’s data sheet refers to the rating of the circuit breaker fitted to the generator, rather than its precise amps-per-phase output.
At the heart of the PL110D5 silent generator is a Perkins 1104C-44TAG2 diesel engine. This proven four-cylinder, 4.4-litre power unit uses turbocharging, direct fuel injection and electronic governing to deliver stable performance at 1500rpm.
The UK Perkins engine produces 90.1 kWm of net prime power and 99.5 kWm of net standby power. Its electronic speed regulation supports consistent frequency control as electrical demand changes, which is particularly valuable where the generator may need to accept varying site loads.
The engine uses a closed-circuit water and antifreeze cooling system and has a 12.6-litre coolant capacity. Its lubrication system holds 8 litres of oil, while the 12V starting arrangement includes a 3 kW starter motor and 100Ah battery.
With G3 performance classification to ISO 8528-5:2018, the engine-generator combination is engineered to respond effectively to changing loads. This capability is important in applications where equipment starts and stops throughout the operating period rather than drawing a fixed, continuous load.
The PL110D5 enclosed generator incorporates a 200-litre daily fuel tank, reducing the need for frequent refuelling during extended operation. At full prime-rated load, stated diesel consumption is approximately 22.6 litres per hour, providing around 8.8 hours of operation from the integral tank under the quoted reference conditions.
Fuel consumption falls as the electrical load decreases:
Actual consumption and running time will vary according to load, ambient conditions, fuel quality, installation and maintenance. Correctly sizing the generator is therefore important: substantial underloading can be inefficient, while insufficient capacity may cause poor load acceptance or overload shutdowns.
Electrical output is produced by a Leroy Somer TAL044D three-phase alternator. This single-bearing alternator features Class H insulation and IP23 protection, supporting dependable operation in demanding generating-set applications.
Standard SHUNT excitation and an R120 automatic voltage regulator provide voltage regulation of approximately ±1%. Optional alternator configurations can offer AREP+ or PMG excitation with an R180 AVR and regulation down to approximately ±0.5%, where enhanced motor-starting performance or voltage stability is required.
The alternator is designed for low waveform distortion, with less than 2% distortion at no load and less than 5% with a balanced linear load. This helps the PL110D5 provide a stable power supply when correctly installed and operated within its rated limits.
The PL110D5 canopied design encloses the engine, alternator and supporting systems within a soundproof housing. Manufacturer-stated acoustic pressure is 80 ± 2 dB(A) at 1m and 72 ± 2 dB(A) at 7m.
This noise reduction makes the 110 kVA silent generator better suited than an open set to commercial premises, construction compounds, industrial sites and other locations where limiting operational noise is important. Site-specific sound levels will still be influenced by surrounding structures, reflecting surfaces, ground conditions, load and measurement position.
The canopy also provides physical protection for the generator’s major components. Access doors allow routine inspection and servicing while helping to keep moving and hot components enclosed during operation.
A Deep Sea 4520 control panel provides straightforward generator monitoring, protection and automatic operation. It supports manual or automatic starting, remote start through a dry contact and automatic start following a mains failure when installed with compatible changeover equipment.
The controller displays key operating information, including:
Protective functions include alarms or shutdowns for failed starting, failed stopping, low oil pressure, high engine temperature, overspeed, underspeed, overload, low fuel, generator overvoltage, undervoltage and abnormal frequency. Event recording, PIN protection, a real-time clock and audible alarms support easier operation and fault investigation.
Optional communications can be added for Ethernet, 4G LTE, GPS or SNMP connectivity using compatible Deep Sea modules. These options can be useful where the generator must be supervised remotely or incorporated into a wider site-management system.
Despite its substantial output, the PL110D5 enclosed generator has a practical footprint for transport and installation. It measures 2330mm long, 1015mm wide and 1605mm high, with a dry weight of 1386kg.
Its cooling system requires an airflow of approximately 165.6m³ per minute, while combustion air demand reaches approximately 6.01m³ per minute at prime output. These figures are particularly important when positioning the generator near walls or installing it within a compound, plant room or additional enclosure.
Adequate ventilation must be provided to prevent hot discharged air from recirculating into the radiator intake. Exhaust routing must also remain within the engine manufacturer’s back-pressure limit, with the data sheet specifying a maximum of 15 kPa. A suitably designed base, safe maintenance clearances, correct earthing and professional electrical connection are essential for reliable operation.
The PL110D5 is well suited to standby power for offices, warehouses, workshops, retail buildings, farms, telecommunications facilities and small industrial premises. Its 88 kW standby output can support essential services during outages when the connected load and starting currents have been assessed correctly.
As an 80 kW prime generator, it can also power construction sites, remote facilities, temporary operations and industrial equipment where a dependable mains supply is unavailable. Loads with large electric motors, compressors, pumps or other high starting currents should be reviewed carefully to ensure the generator can tolerate the initial demand.
For automatic backup power, the PL110D5 can be paired with a correctly rated automatic transfer switch. During a mains failure, the controller can start the generator and allow the transfer system to move the site load onto generator power. Once the utility supply has stabilised, the system can return the load to the mains and complete an engine cool-down cycle.
Manufactured in Europe, the Grupel PL110D5 combines recognised components from Perkins, Leroy Somer and Deep Sea in a practical sound-attenuated package. Its balance of 110 kVA standby capacity, 100 kVA prime output, automatic control capability and integrated 200-litre fuel tank makes it a strong choice for buyers requiring reliable industrial diesel power.
Global Generators can supply the PL110D5 silent generator for UK delivery or worldwide export, with support available for transport, automatic transfer equipment and application-specific generator selection.
