275 kVA Silent Diesel Generator with UK Perkins Power

The Grupel PL275D5 is a 275 kVA silent diesel generator delivering 220 kW standby power and 250 kVA / 200 kW prime power. Combining a UK-built Perkins engine, Leroy Somer alternator and Deep Sea control system, this robust three-phase generator provides dependable power for demanding commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications.

Reliable 275 kVA Standby and 250 kVA Prime Power

Designed for both emergency standby and prime-power duties, the PL275D5 canopied generator offers two clearly defined operating ratings:

  • 275 kVA / 220 kW emergency standby power
  • 250 kVA / 200 kW prime power
  • 400V three-phase output
  • 50Hz frequency
  • 1500rpm operating speed
  • 0.8 power factor
  • 396A available per phase

The 275 kVA standby rating is intended for supplying variable electrical loads during a mains power failure. Under the ISO 8528-1 emergency standby power definition, the generator can operate for up to 200 hours per year, with an average load factor not exceeding 70% over each 24-hour operating period.

For sites requiring regular or long-duration generator use, its 250 kVA prime rating supports variable loads for an unlimited number of operating hours, subject to the prescribed average load and maintenance conditions. Prime operation also permits a 10% overload for up to one hour in every 12 hours, making the PL275D5 suitable for applications where load demand may occasionally rise above its normal operating level.

UK-Built Perkins 1206A-E70TTAG3 Diesel Engine

At the heart of the PL275D5 silent generator is the Perkins 1206A-E70TTAG3, a proven industrial diesel engine developed for dependable power generation. This 7.01-litre, six-cylinder inline engine uses turbocharged aspiration, direct fuel injection and electronic speed regulation to deliver stable performance at 1500rpm.

The UK Perkins engine produces 217.2 kW of net mechanical power at the prime rating and 238.3 kW at the standby rating. Its electronic governor helps maintain consistent engine speed as electrical demand changes, supporting stable 50Hz output when equipment starts, stops or varies in load.

Key engine characteristics include:

  • Four-stroke diesel operation
  • Six-cylinder inline configuration
  • 7.01-litre displacement
  • Turbocharged aspiration
  • Direct fuel injection
  • Electronic governing
  • Closed-circuit water and antifreeze cooling
  • 25-litre coolant capacity
  • 16-litre lubricating oil capacity
  • 12V electric starting system with 140Ah battery

The engine has an ISO 8528-5 G3 performance classification. This grade is suited to generator applications requiring strong response to changes in load, helping the set recover its speed and voltage after motors, pumps, compressors or other demanding equipment are energised.

Fuel Consumption and 400-Litre Tank Capacity

The PL275D5 enclosed generator includes a 400-litre daily fuel tank, allowing it to operate for approximately seven hours at full prime load based on its specified consumption of 56.9 litres per hour.

Fuel use decreases considerably at partial load. At 75% output, the Perkins engine consumes approximately 41.5 litres per hour, while consumption at 50% load is approximately 28.1 litres per hour. At the full 275 kVA emergency standby rating, consumption is approximately 64.5 litres per hour.

Actual running time will depend on electrical demand, site conditions, fuel quality and the operating profile. These load-specific figures nevertheless provide a useful basis for estimating operating costs and planning refuelling intervals.

Leroy Somer TAL046D Alternator

Electrical output is produced by a Leroy Somer TAL046D alternator matched to the engine’s performance characteristics. The single-bearing, three-phase alternator uses Class H insulation and has an IP23 protection rating.

Its standard R150 automatic voltage regulator provides voltage regulation of approximately ±0.8%. Optional excitation and AVR configurations can improve regulation to approximately ±0.5%, depending on the selected specification.

The alternator achieves an efficiency of approximately 92.7% at the 250 kVA prime rating and 92.2% at the 275 kVA standby rating. Waveform distortion is specified at less than 2.5% with no load and below 5% with a balanced linear load, supporting dependable operation of a broad range of commercial and industrial electrical equipment.

Silent Canopy for Reduced Generator Noise

The PL275D5 canopied configuration surrounds the generating set with a purpose-built acoustic enclosure. This helps contain engine and exhaust noise while protecting major components from weather, dust and accidental contact.

Measured acoustic pressure is:

  • 80 ± 2 dB(A) at 1m
  • 72 ± 2 dB(A) at 7m

This makes the PL275D5 silent generator a practical alternative to an open generator set where noise control is important. Typical locations include commercial premises, manufacturing sites, farms, utilities, construction compounds and infrastructure installations near occupied buildings.

The canopy measures 3110mm long, 1185mm wide and 2000mm high. With a dry weight of 2264kg, the generator requires a suitably designed level base with sufficient load-bearing capacity. Its relatively compact footprint also supports efficient positioning within plant areas where available space is limited.

Deep Sea 4520 Generator Controller

A Deep Sea 4520 control panel provides automatic and manual generator operation, clear monitoring and comprehensive engine and alternator protection. It can be configured for automatic mains failure operation, allowing the generator to start when the incoming utility supply is lost and stop after mains power has returned and stabilised.

The controller displays important operating information, including:

  • Phase-to-phase and phase-to-neutral voltage
  • Current
  • Frequency
  • Engine speed
  • Oil pressure and engine temperature
  • Battery voltage
  • Fuel level
  • Running hours
  • kW, kVA, kVAr and energy measurements
  • Power factor
  • Maintenance schedules and event history

Protective functions monitor conditions such as failure to start, failure to stop, low oil pressure, high engine temperature, overspeed, underspeed, low fuel, overload, abnormal generator frequency and under- or overvoltage. Warning and shutdown responses help prevent continued operation when a potentially damaging fault is detected.

Remote start through a dry contact is supported as standard. Optional communications can add Ethernet, 4G LTE, GPS or SNMP connectivity through compatible Deep Sea expansion modules, providing further possibilities for remote generator monitoring.

Circuit Breaker Protection and Output Connection

The generator is supplied with a 400A circuit breaker at its output connection. This figure identifies the rating of the fitted breaker rather than the generator’s calculated operating current.

At 275 kVA, 400V and three-phase output, the PL275D5 supplies up to 396A per phase. Clearly distinguishing between these values is important when specifying downstream cables, switchgear, protection equipment and an automatic transfer switch.

All final electrical arrangements should be designed around the installation conditions, cable route, permissible voltage drop, fault protection requirements and applicable local regulations.

Applications for the PL275D5 Enclosed Generator

With its combination of 220 kW standby capacity, 200 kW prime output and weather-protected acoustic canopy, the PL275D5 is well suited to substantial three-phase loads. Potential applications include:

  • Backup power for factories and warehouses
  • Commercial buildings and distribution centres
  • Farms, food production and agricultural facilities
  • Water treatment and pumping installations
  • Construction and civil engineering projects
  • Telecommunications and utility infrastructure
  • Healthcare and public-sector facilities
  • Remote sites requiring regular prime power

Large motors and other equipment with high starting currents may require additional capacity beyond their normal running demand. A proper load assessment should therefore consider motor-starting methods, load sequencing, nonlinear equipment, future expansion and the highest expected simultaneous demand.

A European-Built Industrial Generator for UK and Export Projects

Manufactured in Europe, the Grupel PL275D5 combines recognised components from Perkins, Leroy Somer and Deep Sea in a robust soundproof package. Its strong standby rating, efficient prime-power capability, substantial fuel tank and automatic control functions make it a capable industrial diesel generator for UK installations and international export projects.

For businesses requiring a dependable 275 kVA diesel generator with a UK-built Perkins engine, reduced noise output and straightforward integration with an automatic transfer system, the PL275D5 provides a practical and cost-effective power solution.
