3,350 kVA of Cummins power for Libya's electrical infrastructure

Across North Africa, demand for reliable electrical infrastructure keeps growing. Big schemes need big generating plant, and they need it on time.

A large electrical contractor in Libya came to us for high-capacity generators to support major electrical infrastructure projects across the country. We supplied two Cummins C1675D5A diesel generators for export. Together, they deliver a combined 3,350 kVA of standby power.

The equipment supplied

Each unit is a Cummins C1675D5A open-type diesel generator, one of the largest sets in our 1000 kVA+ range.

Specification per unit:

  • Model: Cummins C1675D5A
  • Standby rating: 1675 kVA / 1340 kW
  • Prime rating: 1500 kVA / 1200 kW
  • Output: 400V 3 phase, 50Hz at 1500rpm
  • Engine: Cummins KTA50-GS8 V16
  • Alternator: Stamford S7LVD
  • Controller: Cummins PowerCommand 3.3
  • Fuel consumption: 309 litres/hour at 100% prime load
  • Build: open-type

The PowerCommand 3.3 controller handles monitoring, protection and alarms. It also supports paralleling, so both sets can be synchronised to share a load when a project calls for it.

Built for North African conditions

Heat is a real test for any large generator. The C1675D5A's radiator is rated for ambient temperatures up to 40°C, which suits the climate across much of Libya.

The KTA50 engine is a turbocharged, aftercooled V16 with a long track record in heavy-duty power generation. It offers strong load acceptance, so it copes well with the sudden load changes common on large electrical projects. Its 400V, 50Hz output also matches the Libyan grid standard.

Each set is backed by Cummins' standard worldwide warranty: 2 years / 500 hours for standby use, or 1 year with unlimited hours for prime power.

Why open-type sets for infrastructure work?

Open-type generators come without an acoustic canopy. At this size, they are normally housed in a plant room or an enclosure chosen to suit the site.

That brings practical benefits for export. Each set weighs over 10 tonnes dry, so a smaller shipping footprint helps. Engineers also get easy access to every part of the set for connection and servicing.
