Cummins QSK60-G8 Industrial Diesel Engine

At the heart of the C2500D5A-PB enclosed generator is the Cummins QSK60-G8: a 60.2-litre, 16-cylinder diesel engine developed for high-output power generation. Its four-cycle, 60-degree V configuration combines substantial mechanical strength with the dependable performance required for mission-critical facilities.

The engine is turbocharged and low-temperature aftercooled, helping it produce high power density while managing combustion temperatures under sustained load. Cummins HPI-PT fuel-system technology supports accurate fuel delivery, while the electronic governor maintains stable engine speed as electrical demand changes.

Operating at 1500rpm, the QSK60-G8 produces a gross mechanical output of 2145 kW in standby service and 1942 kW at prime rating. A 159mm bore, 190mm stroke and 14.5:1 compression ratio contribute to the engine's ability to handle substantial loads reliably. The 280-litre lubricating-oil capacity also supports the requirements of this large-displacement industrial platform.

This engine and alternator combination makes the C2500D5A-PB suitable for projects where voltage stability, load acceptance and dependable starting performance are essential.

Silent 40-Foot Containerised Generator

The C2500D5A-PB silent generator is housed inside a factory-integrated 40-foot high-cube container. Measuring 12192mm long, 2438mm wide and 2896mm high, the package provides a complete power module that is easier to transport, position and commission than a generator assembled from separate systems on site.

Its dry weight is approximately 31612kg, increasing to around 32046kg when wet. The standardised container format simplifies overseas shipping and is particularly valuable for multinational projects, remote installations and developments requiring repeatable generator modules.

The enclosure incorporates purpose-designed acoustic insulation, a critical-grade exhaust silencer and noise-reduction features. With the specified variable-frequency-drive fan arrangement, the containerised set achieves a sound-pressure level of 83.3 dB(A) at one metre under 100% standby load. This makes the C2500D5A-PB a practical large silent diesel generator for locations where controlling operational noise is an important planning or environmental consideration.

Factory-Integrated Centum™ Force Design

Cummins developed the Centum™ Force range to reduce the installation work traditionally associated with multi-megawatt generating equipment. Major systems are integrated and tested before delivery, helping project teams shorten installation and commissioning programmes.

Standard equipment for the C2500D5A-PB containerised package includes motorised air-intake and outlet louvres, an exhaust silencer, touchscreen HMI, quick connectors for external interfaces, starting batteries, a battery charger and an engine coolant heater. The control panel is embedded into the container, keeping the package self-contained and allowing straightforward access for operation.

Multiple service doors provide access to the engine, cooling equipment and control areas. The modular cooling-system components and removable roof arrangement can also help technicians complete major service work without dismantling the entire enclosure.

The Centum™ Force platform is suitable for flexible multi-generator layouts. Vertical hot-air discharge allows units to be positioned in head-to-head, back-to-back or other space-efficient configurations. Subject to project engineering and local requirements, the containers can also be stacked two high, with Cummins stating that this arrangement can save up to 34% of site space compared with a conventional layout.

Cooling for High-Ambient Environments

This 2500 kVA diesel generator has a cooling system designed for operation in ambient temperatures up to 50°C, making it suitable for hot climates as well as temperate UK installations. Motorised louvres support controlled airflow through the enclosure, while independent fan controls help cooling performance respond to operating conditions.

The cooling system holds approximately 615 litres of coolant and delivers airflow of 37.5 m³/s. Vertical discharge directs hot air away from adjacent equipment and gives site designers greater freedom when arranging multiple generator sets.

The container also protects the generating equipment from wind, rain and dust, supporting use in challenging industrial environments. Exact site requirements should nevertheless be assessed for ventilation clearances, exhaust routing, fuel storage, fire protection and local environmental conditions.

Fuel Consumption and Tank Options

The standard C2500D5A-PB includes a 1,000-litre fuel tank. At 100% prime load, fuel consumption is approximately 432 litres per hour, giving an estimated autonomy of around 2.3 hours from the standard tank. Consumption reduces to approximately 327 litres per hour at 75% prime load, 224 litres per hour at 50% load and 122 litres per hour at 25% load.

At full standby output, the generator consumes approximately 479 litres per hour. Actual fuel use will vary according to load profile, site conditions, fuel quality, auxiliary demand and configuration.

For projects needing extended unattended operation, larger integrated fuel tanks and external bulk-tank connections can be specified. Available Centum™ Force options include 2,000-litre, 4,000-litre and 6,000-litre tank arrangements, fuel-transfer equipment, motorised valves and remote fuel-level monitoring.

PowerCommand Monitoring and Multi-Generator Control

The Cummins PowerCommand 3.3 controller provides centralised control, protection and monitoring for the generator set. Operators can review key engine and electrical information through the integrated touchscreen interface, while connectivity options allow the package to interface with remote monitoring systems and external switchgear.

Advanced paralleling capability makes the C2500D5A-PB particularly suitable for larger power plants formed from multiple generator sets. Several units can be configured to start, synchronise and share load, providing scalable capacity and improved resilience for critical sites.

Optional monitoring can include alternator stator temperature, alternator bearing temperature and exhaust temperature. High-voltage configurations, auxiliary alternators and low-voltage circuit-breaker arrangements are also available to suit different electrical distribution strategies.

Critical Power for Data Centres and Industrial Sites

The C2500D5A-PB is designed for applications where loss of power could interrupt essential operations, damage equipment or create significant financial risk. Its output and modular containerised construction make it well suited to:

  • Data centres and cloud-computing facilities
  • Hospitals and major healthcare campuses
  • Manufacturing and process plants
  • Oil and gas operations
  • Utilities and infrastructure projects
  • Large commercial buildings
  • Telecommunications facilities
  • Temporary and rapidly deployable power plants

For a data centre backup generator project, multiple C2500D5A-PB units can be deployed as part of a resilient N+1 or N+2 power architecture. In industrial prime-power installations, the 2250 kVA generator can support substantial variable loads where a dependable grid connection is unavailable or insufficient.

A Complete Multi-Megawatt Power Solution

The C2500D5A-PB silent package brings its engine, alternator, controls, cooling, acoustic treatment and supporting systems together within one transportable enclosure. This reduces the number of separate components that must be designed, sourced and integrated on site, helping to lower project risk and accelerate commissioning.

Global Generators can supply the Cummins C2500D5A-PB for UK projects and worldwide export, with support available for generator selection, logistics and associated power-system equipment. Cummins warranty cover is up to two years or 500 operating hours for standby applications, while prime-power installations receive one year of cover with unlimited hours, subject to the applicable warranty conditions.
