Convert a current in amps to kilowatts for single phase or 3 phase supplies. It's useful for turning clamp-meter readings or supply ratings into a generator size. Results update as you type.
Single phase: kW = (I × V × PF) ÷ 1000
3 phase: kW = (√3 × I × V × PF) ÷ 1000
Where: kW = real power · I = current in amps (per phase for 3 phase) · V = voltage (line-to-line for 3 phase) · PF = power factor · √3 ≈ 1.732
Example: 100A per phase, 3 phase 400V, PF 0.8: 1.732 × 100 × 400 × 0.8 ÷ 1000 = 55.4 kW
UK mains: 230V single phase, 400V 3 phase (line-to-line). 110V is used for site tools.
Diesel generators are rated at 0.8 PF. Use 1.0 for purely resistive loads such as heaters.
Real power
55.43 kW
1.732 × 100A × 400V × 0.8 ÷ 1000 = 55.43 kW
70 kW Generators covers 55.43 kW withheadroom
Headroom covers motor start-up surges and future load growth. 20-25% is typical.

One amp is worth a different number of kilowatts depending on the voltage, the phase and the power factor:
| Supply | PF 1.0 (resistive) | PF 0.8 (typical generator load) |
|---|---|---|
| Single phase 230V | 0.23 kW | 0.184 kW |
| Single phase 110V (site tools) | 0.11 kW | 0.088 kW |
| 3 phase 400V (per phase amp) | 0.693 kW | 0.554 kW |
Multiply by your current to get a quick estimate. For example, 100A per phase on a 3 phase 400V supply at 0.8 PF is about 55.4 kW.
| Current | Supply | Calculation | kW |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13A | Single phase 230V, PF 1.0 | 13 × 230 ÷ 1000 | 2.99 kW |
| 32A | Single phase 230V, PF 0.8 | 32 × 230 × 0.8 ÷ 1000 | 5.89 kW |
| 63A per phase | 3 phase 400V, PF 0.8 | 1.732 × 63 × 400 × 0.8 ÷ 1000 | 34.9 kW |
| 250A per phase | 3 phase 400V, PF 0.8 | 1.732 × 250 × 400 × 0.8 ÷ 1000 | 138.6 kW |
If you can measure your load, converting amps to kW is one of the most reliable ways to size a generator:
To see the result in kVA rather than kW, which is how many generators are rated, use our Amps to kVA calculator.
Converting amps to kVA gives the apparent power and needs no power factor. Converting amps to kW gives the real power, the useful work being done, so it needs the power factor. For generator sizing, check both: the kW against the engine rating and the kVA against the alternator rating. ATS panels and changeover switches are rated in amps, so keep your original amp figure to hand when choosing switchgear.
On a 3 phase 400V supply at 0.8 PF, 100A per phase is 55.4 kW. On a single phase 230V supply at 0.8 PF it's 18.4 kW, or 23 kW at unity power factor.
At 230V single phase, one amp is 0.23 kW at unity power factor. At 400V 3 phase and 0.8 PF, one amp per phase is about 0.554 kW.
Not exactly. Without the power factor you can only calculate kVA. If you don't know it, use 0.8 for typical mixed loads, or 1.0 for heaters and other resistive loads.
Use the current on one phase, not the total of all three. If the readings differ, use the highest so the generator can handle the busiest phase.
200A per phase at 400V and 0.8 PF is 110.9 kW (138.6 kVA). With 25% headroom you'd look at around 139 kW or 173 kVA, such as a 150 kW generator or a 200 kVA generator.
