Work out the current in amps for any kVA rating, on a single phase or 3 phase supply. Enter the kVA, phase and voltage. The current per phase updates as you type.
Single phase: I = (kVA × 1000) ÷ V
3 phase: I = (kVA × 1000) ÷ (√3 × V)
Where: I = current in amps (per phase for 3 phase) · kVA = apparent power · V = voltage (line-to-line for 3 phase) · √3 ≈ 1.732
Example: 100 kVA, 3 phase 400V: 100000 ÷ (1.732 × 400) = 144.3A per phase
UK mains: 230V single phase, 400V 3 phase (line-to-line). 110V is used for site tools.
No power factor needed: kVA already includes it.

Because kVA already accounts for the power factor, you only need the voltage and the number of phases.
Single phase: multiply the kVA by 1000 to get VA, then divide by the voltage.
3 phase: multiply the kVA by 1000, then divide by √3 (1.732) × the line-to-line voltage.
| kVA | Supply | Calculation | Amps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kVA | Single phase 230V | 10000 ÷ 230 | 43.5A |
| 20 kVA | 3 phase 400V | 20000 ÷ (1.732 × 400) | 28.9A per phase |
| 100 kVA | 3 phase 400V | 100000 ÷ (1.732 × 400) | 144.3A per phase |
| 500 kVA | 3 phase 400V | 500000 ÷ (1.732 × 400) | 721.7A per phase |
So a 20 kVA generator on a 3 phase 400V supply delivers about 29A per phase, and a 100 kVA generator about 144A per phase.
On a 3 phase supply the load is shared across three live conductors. The figure from a kVA to amps per phase calculation is the current flowing in each of those conductors. It isn't a total to split three ways. Don't add the three phases together: a 100 kVA 3 phase generator is rated at about 144A per phase, not 433A.
The kVA rating tells you how much power a generator can supply. The amps tell you what the rest of the installation has to be rated for:
Your electrician or electrical designer will confirm cable and protection sizes. Converting kVA to amps first gives you the numbers to start that conversation.
UK homes and small businesses usually have a single phase 230V supply. Larger commercial, agricultural and industrial sites usually have 3 phase 400V. Choose the phase that matches the supply you're backing up or the equipment you're powering. Browse 3 phase generators or single phase generators.
On a 3 phase 400V supply, 100 kVA is 144.3A per phase. On a single phase 230V supply it would be 434.8A, which is why sets this size are almost always 3 phase.
No. kVA is apparent power, so it already includes the effect of the power factor. You only need the voltage and whether the supply is single phase or 3 phase. Converting from kW to amps does need a power factor: use our kW to Amps calculator.
About 28.9A per phase at 400V 3 phase, or 87A on a single phase 230V supply.
In the UK, use 230V for single phase and 400V for 3 phase (line-to-line). Some older equipment is labelled 240V or 415V. 110V is used for site power tools.
Use our Amps to kVA calculator. For 3 phase, kVA = √3 × amps × volts ÷ 1000.
